more events will be planned after the next AGM. If you have ideas for events
you would like to see the Players organising, or you have ideas about a play
or panto you’d like to see in production, please let us know. Past Events · Autumn Play 2008 – J.B. Priestley’s “Dangerous Corner” On
Friday 31st October and Saturday 1st November 2008,
David Haydon directed the Players in their second Priestley play. Many thanks
to all who took part in this challenging production of a period drama. No
Players performances would be able to go ahead if it weren’t for the constant
time and effort invested by those both on and off the stage and we are
grateful to anyone who supports us. Review and pictures follow this
newsletter and more can be seen on our website. · Proteus Theatre present The Snow Queen The
Players were delighted to welcome a professional touring theatre company to
the village to perform their version of this much loved fairytale by Hans
Christian Andersen on 13th December 2008. The production was
accompanied by a free post show talk from the company which was fun and
informative. We hope everyone who was able to come along enjoyed it and will
continue to support such ventures in future. “Proteus used a simple set and the imagination of the
audience to create mountains, forests, rivers, caves and palaces. As the saying has it “radio is much better
than television – the pictures are so much better”. …
You really had to be there, words alone cannot do justice to the
performance. This is the third time
that I’ve seen Proteus in the Village Hall and each performance has been very
enjoyable. If you get a chance to see
them elsewhere, then do so. Otherwise,
wait until the next time they come to the village and make sure that you come
along.” Extract from David
Haydon’s review written for the Gauntlet · Other events As
summer turned to autumn, the Players also took part in a pub walk to
Stockbridge and provided some entertainment at the Harvest Supper. We
welcomed in the Christmas season with mulled wine and mince pies over an
evening of charades, all whilst busily working away on the panto for 2009. Subs If
you have not yet paid your subscription for membership to the Players 08-09,
please get money to Melanie, or to any committee member. Subs are £15 family,
£7.50 adults, £5 children. Subs for 09-10 will be due at the AGM. Costume Unfortunately,
we are still looking for storage space for our costume. If anyone has any
potential space available or knows of any possibilities for hiring space in
or near the village, please let us know. It is likely that if we can not find
storage soon, we will no longer be able to keep a large store of costumes for
pantos and plays. Village Hall Development: New Stage As
part of the Village Hall Development involves plans for a new stage, the
Players have been taking part in discussions about the particulars of the new
stage in the interest of preserving and hopefully improving upon our current
facility. If any members have a particular interest in this area and would
like to be involved in the discussions, please contact Vicky. Website For

Priestley, directed by David Haydon, was the Somborne Players’ latest triumph!
The play starts with four elegantly
attired women in the drawing room of the Caplan’s house in 1932. They are
discussing a radio play they have been listening to, called "The
Sleeping Dog". The men join the ladies one of whom, Olwen Peel (Vanessa
Sharpe), believes that the dog in the title represents truth and a discussion
follows about whether it is better or not to let it lie: whether some
things are better left unsaid – or not. One of the people present makes a
casual comment as a musical cigarette box is opened which leads to the twists
and turns of the plot. The story held us tightly until the
end, and it was executed by a very strong cast: Sue Jackson, Frances The next
performance of the Somborne Players to look out for and enjoy is the
panto: ‘Dick Whittington and his Cat’ on Friday 20th and Saturday 21st
February – the date is certainly in my diary, and I urge everyone to do
likewise! Extracts
