Newsletter Spring 2007 The Committee
Chairman Vicky Burden Treasurer Melanie Haydon Secretary Vanessa Sharpe Committee
members Nigel Coleman Alan Glynne Jones Sue Holligan or contact the
committee on: somborneplayers@googlemail.com Costume Can you help? The
Players are having a costume storage crisis! Having lost the space that we
used to hire for costume storage, we are desperately looking for somewhere
permanent or at least long term and accessible to store our costumes. We are
very grateful to be using Marsh Court Manor as a temporary solution, but if
anyone has any space that they would be willing to rent out or has any
suggestions for people to ask, please get in touch with Alan as soon as possible. Murder Mystery “Murder in Mid Somborne”, written by Alan Glynne
Jones, Chris Hall and David Haydon, and performed in the Village Hall in
April to raise money for the school, was a great success. Many Players joined
in with this part-scripted part-improvised production and had a fun time
trying to convince the village that they were innocent of murder. We are now
looking into the possibility of publishing the scenario with Lazy Bee Scripts
online. Autumn Play 2007 J.B. Priestley’s “An Inspector Calls”, directed by
Vanessa Sharpe and produced by Jo Finch, will be performed in the Village
Hall on Friday 5th and Saturday 6th October 2007.
Please find attached to this newsletter the cast list and draft rehearsal
schedule. Anyone willing to help out backstage or front of house please let
Vanessa know – all offers very welcome as productions are only possible due
to the off-stage support we get. Panto 2008 So far, we have had no definite expressions of
interest in directing or producing next year’s pantomime. It may sound like
it’s still a long way away, but we intend to have the start up meeting in
September and begin rehearsals soon after, so the sooner we can get organised
and choose a script the better. The panto will be performed at the end of
February half term. The committee are here to support anyone wanting to
take this on for the first time, so if you’re interested but concerned about
what it all involves, then get in touch with Melanie. Children’s
Performance Due to the brilliant talent displayed by the younger
actors in this year’s pantomime, we are interested in putting together a
children’s performance, possibly to be performed instead of an adult play
next year. If anyone has any ideas or thinks they would like to
be involved in the organisation of this in any way, please contact Sue H. This could be great new direction for the
Players to go in, but it will need a lot of adult support so we are looking
for a group of people to work together to make it possible. If you like the
idea, please get in touch. Events We have planned some other social activities
throughout the year to which all Players, partners and, where appropriate,
families are welcome. Coming up on 20th June is a Charades evening at Melanie and David’s, where you will work as a team
to outwit other Players with your miming skills. Please bring along something
to share - a plate of food, nibbles or some drink. Tea and coffee will be
provided. Then on 25th July some of the Players
will be going to see the Maskers Theatre Company perform Pride and Prejudice in the grounds of Mottisfont Abbey. Please
book your own tickets for this by phoning 02380711818 or on the website at www.ticketsouth.co.uk. We will be
meeting there at 7pm and the show starts at 7.30. If anyone wants to attend
but needs a lift or can offer lifts to others, please contact Vanessa. On Saturday 18th August Sue H will be
hosting a Players barbecue. If you
are able to come along please let Sue know by 11th August so that
food can be planned and she can let you know what to bring. Families are very
welcome. And if you’re coming along to the Church Fete on 9th
June and would be able to spare a little time to help out on the Players’ jigsaw stall, then please let Melanie
know in advance – even half an hour would be a great help. Any donations of
jigsaws for the stall are also appreciated. All events for the year are listed below. Some dates
and venues are still to be decided.
Website The Players now have their very own easy to access
website. You can find this on www.giraffeandtiger.plus.com/players
or by going to the Sombornes website on www.thesombornes.org.uk and
clicking on the link in the Players page. The website includes past and
current information on committee meetings, AGMs, newsletters and productions
and also has links to photos and a forum for discussion. Don’t worry if
you’re not online – all important information will be delivered by hand to those
who don’t have email addresses. But if you do like to know what’s going on on
a more regular basis, the forum is a great way to share ideas and have your
say. Contacts We are currently trying to make sure that everyone who
wants to be a member of the Players has the chance to join and is kept up to
date with everything that is going on. Attached to this newsletter is a contacts detail
sheet. We would be very grateful if you could complete your details and
return this to Vanessa at 14 Scott Close. Alternatively, you can complete the
form online at www.giraffeandtiger.plus.com/players/join/join.htm
. If you know someone who wants to join or who has been
involved in the past and may no longer be on our contacts list, please ask
them to get in contact with the committee by phone or by email: somborneplayers@googlemail.com
or to fill in the form. Membership All are reminded that annual subscriptions are now
due to be paid to Melanie. If you would like to join the players this costs
£6 for adults and £3 for under 16s. Your membership card will give you a
quick reference to the committee, the website and events throughout the year.
You will also receive regular newsletters and details of upcoming
productions. Please ensure when you join that your contact details are up to
date. Autumn Production 2007 – J.B. Priestley’s “An
