Costume

Time is running out. Since May this year the Players have been kindly relying on Marsh Court for temporary accommodation of our costumes, in the hope that a permanent, accessible storage space could be found soon. Unfortunately, this has not happened. We now need the support of our members to be willing to store one box or bag of costumes for a few months while we decide whether it is cost effective to buy our own storage space or whether we have to give up our costumes completely. If you have any space at all that you could spare for just a few months, please let Melanie know before the end of August. Thank you in advance for your help.

Church Fete

Thanks to Melanie Haydon and those of you who supported the Players jigsaw stall at the Church Fete in June by either donating jigsaws, manning the stall or buying the puzzles for yourself. We helped raise £60 in aid of the church and leftover puzzles are being given to charity.

Charades

On 20th June the Somborne Players put on a team charades evening organised by Vanessa Sharpe. The charades were custom written and some easier to deliver and guess than others in the one minute time limit. To add to the confusion, a random factor was introduced, meaning some charades had to be performed with eyes closed or in half the time. After a hilarious few hours “The Aristocrats”, made up of Phyllis Bennett, Nigel Coleman, Sue Holligan and Pollyann Monk, were declared victorious and claimed their chocolate prize.

Thanks to all who took part for bringing refreshments and making fools out of themselves, and particular thanks to David and Melanie Haydon for the use of their living room.

Theatre trip

On 25th July some of the Players went to Mottisfont Abbey to watch the Maskers Theatre Company perform Jane Austen’s “Pride and Prejudice”. It was a great performance which brought to life the characters of Lizzie and Darcy and the world of early 19th century England. In particular, the costumes were superb and the addition of a real horse-drawn carriage was a delight.

Barbecue

The Players’ next social event is a barbecue on Saturday 18th August at midday in Sue Holligan’s garden (although if the weather persists we may just be allowed indoors). This is a family event where members are encouraged to bring along children, partners, grandmothers… It will also be a great opportunity for new members to get to know people, or for those who haven’t been involved in a while to catch up. Please let Sue or Vanessa know by 11th August how many of you are attending so we can organise food.

Walk and picnic

Another family event will take place on Sunday 9th September. We will meet outside the parish church at 11.30am for a walk around the local countryside with a picnic lunch (or, again depending on the weather, maybe a pub lunch). The walk will last a few hours and there may even be treasure to find along the way. Please contact Nigel if you want to know more.

Autumn Play 2007

J.B. Priestley’s “An Inspector Calls”, directed by Vanessa Sharpe and produced by Jo Finch, will be performed in the Village Hall on Friday 5th and Saturday 6th October 2007. Please find attached a poster and details of rehearsals leading up to the performances: if you want to print out the poster and display it in your window, that would be great; also feel free to come along to rehearsals to see how things are going. Anyone willing to help out backstage or front of house please let Vanessa know as soon as possible – all offers are very welcome as productions are only possible due to the off-stage support we get.

Harvest Supper

The Players will be providing the entertainment at the Harvest Supper on Saturday 13th October. Vicky is currently looking for a sketch and some actors, so get in touch if you want to be involved.

Panto 2008

Next year’s panto will take place at the end of the February half term. The auditions for speaking roles will take place on 19th September, but before that we will be holding an open production meeting. As directing and producing a panto is a big job we want to put together a team of people who are interested in helping out. So if you’re keen to get involved backstage or front of house, or if you’d like to have a go at marketing or music, or if you like the idea of directing but don’t want to do it alone, join us on Wednesday 5th September 7.45 in the Epworth Hall. Remember, your support for big productions like the panto is essential and appreciated.

Children’s Performance

Due to the brilliant talent displayed by the younger actors in this year’s pantomime, we are going to be putting together a children’s performance, possibly to be performed instead of an adult play next year.

Thanks to those of you who have already expressed an interest and offered your help. If anyone else has any ideas or thinks they would like to be involved in the organisation of this in any way, please contact Sue H. This exciting new venture will need a lot of adult support so we are looking for a group of people to work together to make it possible. If you like the idea, please get in touch.

Website

Don’t forget, the Players now have their very own easy to access website. You can find this on www.giraffeandtiger.plus.com/players or by going to the Sombornes website on www.thesombornes.org.uk and clicking on the link in the Players page. The website includes past and current information on committee meetings, AGMs, newsletters and productions and also has links to photos and a forum for discussion.

Don’t worry if you’re not online – all important information will be delivered by hand to those who don’t have email addresses. But if you do like to know what’s going on on a more regular basis, the forum is a great way to share ideas and have your say.

Contacts

Thanks to those of you who completed our contacts form. It has allowed us to be certain that we have your details up to date and are following your preferences regarding photos and the forum.

It is important to us that we have a complete list of members so everyone can be kept up to date with everything that is going on. If you haven’t already done so, please return the attached form to Vanessa at 14 Scott Close or complete the form online at www.giraffeandtiger.plus.com/players/join/join.htm .

If you know someone who wants to join or who has been involved in the past and may no longer be on our contacts list, please ask them to get in contact with the committee by phone or by email: somborneplayers@googlemail.com or to fill in the form.

Membership

Thank you to all who have renewed their membership this year. If you have not yet paid your annual subscription, this is now due to be paid to Melanie. If you would like to join the players this costs £6 for adults and £3 for under 16s. Your membership card will give you a quick reference to the committee, the website and events throughout the year. You will also receive regular newsletters and details of upcoming productions. Please ensure when you join that your contact details are up to date.
