AGM 2005 MINUTES OF THE ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING OF THE
SOMBORNE PLAYERS HELD ON THURSDAY 12 MAY 2005, AT 7:45PM IN THE EPWORTH HALL PRESENT: Sue Spurling, Audrey Gannaway, Sue Holligan, David
Haydon, Melanie Haydon, Claire Bevan, Lesley Evans, Vanessa Sharpe, Alan
Glynne-Jones, Cynthia Bloom, Anne Riley, Andrew Flanagan, Audrey Thomas,
Linda Aucock, Nigel Coleman, PollyAnn Monk APOLOGIES:
Rebecca Rickard, Vicky Burden, Chris Hall, Jo Finch, Catherine Cartwright,
Keith Chapman, Bill Sutton, Peter Duncan. David Haydon opened the
meeting by welcoming members. MINUTES OF THE LAST ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING: The minutes of the last AGM were read and accepted,
proposed by Sue Spurling and seconded by Lesley Evans. MATTERS ARISING: None CHAIRMAN’S REPORT: David Haydon gave the
chairman’s report. The 2004-05 year started with a reading of
Macbeth in the Epworth Hall in April.
This was followed by an evening of poetry reading in June and a visit
to a performance of “The Merry Wives of Windsor” at Mottisfont in July. Harvest
Supper
The Players again provided
the entertainment for the Harvest Supper in October. There was singing, monologues, flute music,
juggling and a short sketch. The
entertainment was much enjoyed by all present. Charade and
The Patient Following the success of Darling Mr London in 2003, it was decided to
do another Autumn production. This
time it was two one act plays which were performed in October. Charade was directed by Rebecca Rickard. It had an all female cast and was about the
search for a unique character to star in a film. Sue Jackson made her debut on stage in this
after the rigours of stage management for the pantomime. The Patient was directed by Sue Spurling
and was set in a Nursing home and was an Agatha Christie whodunit with the
usual multiple suspects. This play saw
the return to the Kings Somborne stage of Nigel Coleman as the Inspector. Ashley
Ladies Christmas Concert
Several Players took part
in the Ashley Ladies’ Christmas Concert in the church on 14 December. The Players read a selection of readings,
sacred and secular. Panto 2005 This year’s Pantomime,
Aladdin, was a great success, despite smaller audiences than for some
years. Feedback from various sources
described it as the best ever, and we got a very good write‑up in the
Gauntlet and Romsey Advertiser. We did
four performances again this year, continuing the Thursday evening
performance that was re‑instated last year. Jo Finch directed with support from the
usual suspects. And it was good to see
a number of new faces in the cast. Despite
a significant drop in ticket sales, much reduced costs meant that the panto
still made a profit. The panto is a major
undertaking which would not be successful without the effort of a large
number of people, many of whom are not members of the Players and we are very
grateful to them for their time and support. Harvest
Supper 2005
The Players have again been
asked to
organise the entertainment for the Harvest Supper. Autumn
Production 2005
Vanessa Sharpe will be
directing a comedy thriller in the Autumn.
Casting should be complete by the AGM. Monthly Meetings The committee have tried to
maintain a programme of monthly meetings throughout the year, whenever they
can be fitted around other events.
Although not exactly well attended, those who have attended meetings
over the past year have enjoyed them.
If there is anything that anyone would like the committee to arrange,
please let a committee member know. It
will be discussed in committee and we will try to arrange it. Finally, my thanks to the
rest of the committee for all the hard work that they have put in to make the
past year a busy one for the Players – and, I think, a successful one. TREASURER’S REPORT: Claire Bevan presented the
accounts. The pantomime made a profit
of just under £500, the play broke even.
Insurance increased and the NODA fee increased due to higher ticket
sales. Linda Aucock proposed that the
accounts were accepted and this was seconded by Audrey Thomas. The subscription income does
not cover the fixed costs of the society – rental of the scout hut, insurance
and NODA subscription so a proposal to raise subscriptions to £6 (£3 for
those still in full time education) was proposed by Andrew Flanagan and
seconded by Cynthia Bloom. This was
passed unanimously. It was also agreed
that those taking part in the pantomime for the first time would be asked to
make a contribution of ½ the subscription rate. ELECTION OF OFFICIERS: Anne Riley had previously
indicated that she did not wish to stand again. David Haydon stated that he was prepared to
do a further year as Chairman but would look to stand down at next year’s
AGM. Audrey Thomas proposed that
the remaining committee be re-elected en-bloc and this was seconded by Alan Glynne-Jones. Vanessa Sharpe was proposed by
Sue Holligan and seconded by Sue Spurling to fill the vacant position on the
committee.
Chair: David
Haydon Secretary: Melanie Haydon Treasurer: Claire Bevan Committee: Sue Spurling Lesley Evans Rebecca Rickard Vanessa Sharpe ELECTION OF AUDITOR: Thanks were proposed to John
Green for auditing the accounts.
Proposed Cynthia Bloom, seconded Lesley Evans. A gift would be sent as in previous years. John Green Nominated by: Claire Bevan Seconded by: Andrew Flanagan As all were in favour John was duly elected. ANY OTHER BUSINESS: The Church Fete will be on 11th
June and volunteers are needed to help with the refreshments. There will be a poetry reading
evening on 15th June at 7:45pm in the Epworth Hall. There was some discussion on a
suitable production to attend as a group and it was decided that a group
would attend the Stockbridge Summer Players production of “The Mad Woman of
Chaillot“ by Jean Gireaudoux which takes place on July 7th – 9th. It is co-directed by Chris Hall and Sue
Jackson is playing one of the main roles. There are three trunks full of
material in Cynthia Bloom’s garage which she would like removed. There is no further room in the scout hut
so it was asked if the material could be distributed between members. The autumn production will be
on Sept 2nd and 3rd. We have been asked to provide
some entertainment for the Harvest Supper on 1st October and at
the Somborne Society’s Trafalgar Day event on 22nd October. David Haydon described an idea
for a Village Hall extension which would provide a permanent home for scenery
and costumes as well as workshop space and better stage access for the
disabled. He has been investigating
whether it would be possible to obtain a grant from the Arts Council. The idea was well received and the meeting
agreed it should be pursued and linked to the Parish Plan initiative. Sue Spurling proposed that
costume hire should be increased to £10 for non members and this was seconded
by Audrey Thomas and passed unanimously.
Audrey Thomas proposed that members would pay £5 and this was seconded
by Lesley Evans. Audrey Gannaway proposed a
vote of thanks to Sue Spurling for all her hard work on costumes. Andrew Flanagan asked if the
loft in the Village Hall could be boarded to make it easier to work with the
lighting there. Nigel asked if it was possible
to see the video made by the Wiggins family of the pantomime or the photos
taken. Melanie Haydon agreed to follow
up on this. The church have asked if the
Players would like to choose a hymn for the Flower Festival and the proposal
was “Now the Day is Over”. Members were reminded that
subscriptions were due now. The meeting ended at 9:05pm. |
